Berlin - The Suicide Cemetery in Grunewald

The Suicide Cemetery in Grunewald

In the Grunewald forest there is a somewhat unusual burial ground. Here the dead who had taken their own lives were buried, as these could not be buried in holy ground for religious reasons. This cemetery has been used for more than 130 years.

At the entrance to the Cemetery

Among the more famous burial sites, five tall wooden crosses with Cyrillic writing are seen guarding the Tsarist sympathizers who, after the news of the Bolshevik victories in Russia, took their own lives. And among the most mysterious is the 'skin dead' Minna Braun - the nurse who in 1919 attempted suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills. She was laid in a coffin in an open grave, but when she was to be declared dead the next day, she was alive again. However, Minna died 3 years later and is buried here within the walls. Among the most recent is 'Nico' alias Christa Päffgen's grave, who in 1967 released a record with Velvet Underground and then died in 1988 after a hard life on drugs.
